What Does It Mean To Be An Extension?

Throughout 2018, we have evolved our strategy and capabilities around extensions. Qlik's open platform has always allowed developers to build new functionality that takes advantage of our engine and extends the capabilities of our analytics products. Historically, extensions were typically created by third parties and largely unsupported. This is changing.

During the summer, we opened our ‘Trusted Extension Developer’ (TED) program. This program allows Qlik to work closely with our developer ecosystem to ensure that the capabilities they create are fully reviewed by Qlik for their quality and reliability.

Now, we are taking our support for extensions to the next level by introducing Extension Bundles in Qlik Sense. Over the next several releases, Qlik is planning to bring many of the popular open source extensions that have been built by partners and developers and deliver them together with the Qlik Sense product. These extensions will be delivered as part of the Qlik Sense installation program as themed bundles, and will be supported by Qlik. This means that customers who are using these extensions and are current on maintenance will be able to get technical support from Qlik for the versions that shipped with the product. In addition, these extensions will be tested and supported by the Qlik development team for upgrade compatibility from release to release.

With the Qlik Sense November 2018 release, we are delivering our first extension bundle – the “Dashboard Bundle.” This package offers six commonly used dashboard controls for advanced authoring, including a date range picker, navigation button, show / hide container, tabbed container, variable input box, and an on-demand reporting object for Qlik NPrinting. Contributors to this bundle have included our own field team members as well as external contributors from the Qlik Branch community. We are excited to be working with the Qlik ecosystem to provide more functionality and depth for Qlik Sense implementations with these supported bundled extensions.

With extension bundles, customers get the best of both worlds. Customers can now take advantage of enhanced functionality and unique innovation created on our platform by our ecosystem of partners, while feeling confident that these will be supported by Qlik as part of the wider deployment. Further, our intent is to contribute these extensions back to the open source community on Qlik Branch, allowing others to have the ability to further extend the functionality of these extensions.

We are excited to give customers the best of both worlds! We are taking extensions to the next level by introducing Extension Bundles in Qlik Sense.
